“For as long as I shall live, I will testify to love. I’ll be a witness in the silences when words are not enough. With every breath I take, I will give thanks to God above. For as long as I shall live, I will testify to love”. – Avalon

Do you remember the old TV series, “Touched by an Angel”? Yea, yea….It’s pretty old, I think in the late 90’s but still it remains one of my all-time favorite. I happened to come across some few episodes on YouTube and watching them again was really wonderful and inspiring.

Now, one of the episodes that really struck me was “Psalm 151” which featured Wynnona Judd as a guest artist. This episode made a lasting impression on me particularly because I could very well relate with it and from this I got the headline for this post.

In this episode, Wynnona Judd had a son who was terminally ill. He wrote a list of things he wanted to accomplish before he died and one of them was for his mum to complete one of her songs – Testify to love.

Some few minutes before he breathed his last, a small concert was held in his honor as the community led by his mum sang to him, the complete version of her song which was according as Tess did put it, “the world’s premiere of the 151st Psalm”…. as there are only 150 Psalms in the Bible.

Check out this short excerpt:

It so happened that as the mum was still singing, the boy died. Monica, who was with the boy as he passed away signaled that information to the mum. I don’t know how she did it…… I don’t know from where she got the strength but she remained where she was and continued singing to the glory of God. The tears did flow down her cheeks (as did mine…) but she kept singing.

Now, that is strength unimaginable…. That is strength that can only come from God.

The lyrics of the song when meditated upon truly shows that all we have and are today is not by our power or might…they are all a testimony to the love of God. Let’s see it now, shall we? And possibly replay the clip above as we sing along meditatively.

Testify to love by Wynnona Judd

All the colors of the rainbow
All the voices of the wind
Every dream that reaches out
Reaches out to find where love begins

Every word of every story
Every star in every sky
Every corner of creation
Lives to testify

For as long as I shall live pic280
I will testify to love
I’ll be a witness in the silences
When words are not enough
With every breath I take
I will give thanks to God above
For as long as I shall live
I will testify to love

From the mountains to the valleys
From the rivers to the sea
Every hand that reaches out
Every hand that reaches out to offer peace

Every simple act of mercy
Every step to kingdom come
All the hope in every heart
Will speak what love has done

For as long as I shall live
I will testify to love
I’ll be a witness in the silences
When words are not enough
With every breath I take
I will give thanks to God above
For as long as I shall live
I will testify to love

For as long as I shall live
I will testify to love
I’ll be a witness in the silences
When words are not enough
With every breath I take
I will give thanks to God above
For as long as I shall live
I will testify to love

This episode got me thinking about how my family struggled with challenges of ill-health and survived through it all. Thomas Paine said, “The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph” and so is our story.

My elder sister is a proud survivor of breast cancer. Now, she is one person I know that doesn’t joke with her health.

She does her exercises, takes lots of fruits and water, in fact, she is very health conscious so it was a bit surprising to find out she had cancer. The fight against cancer wasn’t easy.

The road was long and difficult but God was in control. He took the wheels of the car as she rode this long and difficult road and though at times, it was bumpy, she was peaceful and calm all through because she allowed God take charge.

Her faith in God was immense and nothing, not even her situation shook her. She submitted to God and let His peace and love overwhelm her. She is one woman with a strong will that even the devil knows better than to mess with her.

Yes, it was heart wrenching seeing her like that – skinny, black, all her hair had come off because of the chemotherapy but still there was this light in her eyes. She may have been weak and frail physically but she remained ever strong and unshakable in her faith like the mountains and God’s glory radiated through her.

In her eyes, she had life because she had chosen life and even as she spoke and declared life unto herself constantly, she submitted to the will of God for her. She let the peace of God flood her soul and she found the strength and courage to fight. SHE CHOSE TO LIVE.

There was a comment she once made to me…she said, “Omon, once a person loses hope, the person is already dead on the inside and there is nothing anyone can do to help”.

At another time, she said to me “Omon, I thank God for cancer”. It sounds crazy, right? How could someone thank God for a disease? But she could say this because she had seen and experienced the love of God in such an unfathomable way.

Though her body had to go through pains and sufferings, her spirit grew stronger each day and she immersed herself deeply in the love of God. She survived not by her own power but by the grace of God.

Why did she have to go through this? Why did our family have to suffer trauma and pain? None of these questions mattered. All that mattered was God had taken the wheel and all turned out perfect. She is bouncing in health now and using her life as an inspiration to help others.

Troubles must come. Trials must come but we don’t have to fall off the wagon. All we need do is open our hearts to God and let His love overwhelm us and we will see that we can smile again. Of course! We can.

I do not know your story. I do not know your challenges. I do not know what your pains are but what I do know is just like my family did conquer all our challenges, you can conquer yours. I can promise you that there is nothing as relieving as letting God just have His way. You will always smile at the end.

In the words of Carrie Underwood, let “Jesus take the wheel”.

Just look intensely and you will be able to see the tiny ray of sunlight at the end of the tunnel and you will know that you can indeed survive the day.

As Og Mandino did say, “Always seek out the seed of triumph in every adversity”.

It’s in us…….that very need, that very desire, that very want our hearts crave for can be achieved in accordance to the will of God. All it takes is a little bit of faith even if it’s as small a mustard seed and we will be able to move mountains.

Trust in divine providence. Look beyond the hardships and difficulties of life and be happy. Choose to be happy. Praise God in all things. Glorify His name.  Even as we cry in pain, even as our hearts bleed, let us give unending praise to God. Believe in God and in the power of His might and do not lose faith.

Keep singing! Keep believing! Keep trusting!

When we lose a loved one, we don’t lose to death instead we celebrate the life of the loved one who has been carried into the arms of the Father where there is no more pain. When we feel our hearts are shattered and we won’t be able to keep living, then the angel God has sent to us is revealed to us and we realize that not for a moment did God abandon us.

In our journey of pain, in our journey of suffering, in our journey of sorrow, He walked side by side with us and when it seemed like we would fall or couldn’t go on anymore, then He carried us in His arms.

No matter the challenges, God never leaves us alone. He is with us every step of the way. Let us acknowledge that. Nothing that happens to us is a coincidence. He has His reasons and He knows best.

Let us place our heads on His bosom and just believe in Him. The birds of the air, the fishes of the sea, all of creation, who cares for them all? Are we not more important than these? Did Jesus come to die for the fishes? Did he come to die for the animals? He came to die for us and He has promised us life.

Now, that is only a promise. It is left for us to choose it. Why give up? Why let the devil win? When we despair, when we give up hope, when we lose heart, we make the devil happy but the truth is we are stronger than we think and can pull through any situation. It is never easy but it is not impossible. We have the God of love on our side and love conquers all, remember?

We are deeply hurt and pained. “The situation is terrible”, “the circumstance is unforgivable”, “I can’t go on” …….. Look at Job in the bible. He lost everything he had but still remained faithful to God saying in Job 1:21 “The lord gives and the lord takes. Blessed be the name of the lord”.

Look at Martyrs and Saints who died for the faith and refused to give up on God. The early Christians were persecuted and killed but they rather gave up their physical bodies than their souls. This life is so much more than it appears to be. Life is deeply spiritual and we need God to be able to go through this journey.

No one said not to cry. No one said it will be easy. In all truth, it isn’t. It never is but with God, we can do it. It hurts, your heart is pained. Sure! You can cry. It is allowed but let the tears pave way for you to see clearly the hand of God at work.

Your victory begins that moment amidst challenges you look up to heaven and say, “God, I don’t know why all of this is happening but what I do know is that you are in control and because you are, everything is going to be fine”.

That moment, when you give all to God and allow Him take the burden off of you, ……that moment when you hand him the steering wheel and allow His will to be done,…….that moment, the devil loses the battle.

That moment, the devil has no more hold over you. Why? Because he knows that now that you have handed all to God, there would be no more tears, sadness or pain.

He knows that now, you have given the mantle of leadership to God, he is defeated. He can no longer gloat over your failures, pains or sorrows because in these you are a witness to the greatness of God; in these, you let the name of God be glorified; in your weakness, you let God be your strength. You have stepped aside for God to take charge. The devil knows this and flees.

You know why? Because even he acknowledges that JESUS IS LORD. He knows he is already defeated and because Jesus is in you, he would leave you alone. He feeds on your pain and sorrows. So my dear friend, NO MORE!

Choose to live. Choose to be happy. Choose to smile always. Choose to laugh. Choose to praise God at all times in any and in every situation.

With Him there is happiness forever.
